The exact origin and meaning of celtic knots is debated amongst many. One theory holds that early celtic religions did not allow realistic representations of animals and that knotwork variations represented a metaphorical view of the natural world. Others point to the meditative aspects of the designs where the conscious mind is actively engaged with precise, repetitive tasks to the extent that it no longer censors images from the unconscious. Many items decorated with knotwork have been found in archaeological sites. Items such as torcs, bowls and cups are adorned with intricate patterns by ancient smiths.
